Buddha was born in Lumbini, in present-day Nepal, around the 6th century BCE. His birth name was Siddhartha Gautama, and he was born into a royal family. Legend has it that his mother, Queen Maya, had a dream of a white elephant entering her womb, which was interpreted as a sign of a great being being conceived.
